Their society is governed by an Elder Brain—a massive, disembodied brain that resides in a brine-filled pool, serving as the colony’s collective consciousness and leader.

Mind flayers reproduce through a gruesome process called ceremorphosis, in which a tadpole is implanted into a humanoid host's brain, eventually transforming the host into a new illithid.
