Happy Sunday, and welcome back to Tabletop Thoughts!

Well, another week has come and gone, and I managed to find some time to work on a few hobby projects. I never seem to have as much time as I’d like, and my list of things I want to do certainly isn’t getting any shorter. In fact, I think I add new projects to the list faster than I finish the old ones!

Still, I got a few things done this week, so let’s take a look at what I’ve been up to.

First off, I finished another YouTube video showing off some of the hobby projects I’ve been working on lately. As you can probably tell from the thumbnail, there’s quite a bit of Battle Hulks involved this time around!

You can watch the video here:

Battle Hulks is a miniature wargame from Fat Dragon Games featuring massive mechanical war machines battling it out on the tabletop. It’s a fun-looking game with 3D-printable models, and I’ve been spending quite a bit of time getting everything printed and painted so I can finally get a game on the table.

Here are the two Hulks I’ve finished so far. Both are Hulk 01 models, but I printed them using different methods. The one on the left was printed in FDM, while the one on the right was printed in resin. It’s interesting to see how the two printing methods compare, especially when it comes to the smaller details.

I wasn’t completely happy with the original color scheme on the FDM version, so I went back and added some copper to the model. I think it looks much better now, and I definitely prefer the copper over the dark blue I originally used. Sometimes a small change in color can make a big difference in how a miniature turns out.

Here are a few more Hulks currently making their way across the painting table. Just like the first two, I’ve got a mix of FDM and resin prints in the works. I’m getting closer to having enough painted models to put together a small skirmish, and I’m looking forward to finally seeing how they perform in an actual game.

Of course, having the miniatures ready is only part of the equation. I’m going to need somewhere for these mechanical monsters to battle it out.

Speaking of tables…

I’ve started printing some Slaughterscape tiles to use as the playing surface for Battle Hulks. Originally, I was planning to keep things simple and use some green flocked foam tiles that I already have. But after taking another look at the Slaughterscape terrain, I decided they were just too good-looking not to use. I think they’ll make a much more interesting battlefield for the Hulks.

So far, I’ve printed some of the rails that hold the tiles together. I still need to print the corners and clips before I can move on to the tiles themselves. Once all those pieces are finished, I can start the long process of printing enough tiles to cover the tabletop. It’s going to take a while, but I think the finished battlefield will be worth the effort.

I also got the urge to do a little kitbashing with some of the pool diving toys I showed in the video. I grabbed part of an old squirt gun, a wooden disk, and a few bits and pieces from some Final Faction toys to see what I could come up with. After playing around with the parts for a while, I ended up with a pretty neat little piece of scatter terrain.

I’m thinking it could work well as an objective marker for a “defend the flag” style scenario, where one side has to protect it while the other tries to capture it. It’s nothing too complicated, but that’s part of what I enjoy about kitbashing. Taking a handful of random pieces that weren’t meant to go together and turning them into something useful for the tabletop is always satisfying.

Not too bad for a week when I had to put in some extra hours at my regular job, got called into my second, part-time job on my only day off, and still managed to spend quite a bit of time working on my upcoming Shadowdark supplement and adventure. Somehow, I even found time to paint, print, and kitbash along the way.

I guess that’s just how the hobby goes sometimes. Some weeks, everything falls into place; other weeks, you have to force things together with a hot glue gun and a little determination. Either way, it’s always nice to look back at the end of the week and see what you’ve managed to accomplish.

Keep on gaming!
