Happy Sunday, and welcome back to Tabletop Thoughts!
Another week comes to a close, but I was able to squeeze in some crafting time once again. This week, I focused on the cavern dungeon sticks that will work alongside all of the other Underdark terrain I’ve been building over the past few months.
I managed to get through about half of the dungeon sticks I have printed so far. Once they’re all finished, they should give me even more options for laying out caverns and dungeon areas while keeping everything consistent with the Underdark theme I’ve been working on.

I went with the same color theme I’ve been using for the rest of my Underdark terrain, but added a little extra color to the random mushrooms scattered across some of the dungeon sticks. I used purples and pinks to help them stand out without being too distracting on the table.
I really like how they turned out. The mushrooms add just enough color to break up the darker Underdark palette while still fitting in nicely with the rest of the terrain.

As for using the dungeon sticks with the UDT and other scatter terrain, it will really depend on the setup. For a large Underdark cavern, I’ll probably place them individually around the table to give just a hint of the cavern walls rather than creating one complete, continuous feature. This should help define the space while still keeping the cavern feeling large and open.

For smaller caverns, or places where a passage simply widens a bit, I can connect the dungeon sticks together to better define the space. They also pair really well with my cavern pillars, helping create the illusion of a small, tight area.
I think this will help make the players feel confined and closed in without actually needing to put a ceiling over the terrain. You still get that cramped underground feeling while keeping everything open and easy to see and play on the table.
Hopefully, this week I can find the time to finish up the rest of the cavern dungeon sticks and maybe get a few other pieces completed as well.
With Halloween coming up, now is also a great time to keep an eye out for cheap plastic decorations and other little bits that can be tossed into the drawers of random crafting supplies. You never know when something will spark an idea for a future terrain project. I’ll have to see what I can find this year and whether anything inspires a new build.
Until next time,
Keep on gaming!
