Happy Wednesday, and welcome back to Tabletop Thoughts!

The latest installment in our May 2026 Print, Paint, and Play series has arrived, and this time we’re taking the Ironmoor Troll from painted miniature to tabletop encounter.
In the video, we venture deep into the Blackroot Mire, where Grukk Ironmoor and his Mirekin frogfolk followers lie in wait for unsuspecting adventurers. Designed for Shadowdark RPG but easily adaptable to other fantasy roleplaying games, this encounter combines memorable monsters, dangerous terrain, and flexible scaling options to create a challenging swamp ambush for parties of nearly any level.
Meet Grukk Ironmoor
At the center of the encounter stands Grukk Ironmoor, a Level 5 troll warlord clad in scavenged armor and wielding a massive iron hammer. Like any good troll, Grukk possesses powerful regeneration abilities, making him a dangerous foe even after adventurers believe they’ve gained the upper hand.
Rather than standing alone, Grukk commands a band of Mirekin frogfolk hunters who use the swamp terrain to their advantage. Their mobility and ranged attacks create constant pressure while Grukk closes in for devastating melee strikes.
Expanding the Threat
For Game Masters looking to increase the challenge, the encounter includes several optional additions.
A Mirekin Shaman can join the battle, bringing magical support through Entangling Reeds, a spell designed to hinder movement and trap adventurers within the mire. This adds a tactical layer to the encounter, forcing players to carefully consider positioning and movement.
For even tougher groups, giant swamp toads can be added to the battlefield. These creatures help create a more chaotic and unpredictable fight while reinforcing the encounter’s swamp-themed atmosphere.
Built for Flexible Play
One of the goals behind this encounter was adaptability.
For lower-level parties, Grukk and a handful of frogfolk can provide a tense but manageable challenge. More experienced adventurers can face the full encounter with shamans and giant toads. At the same time, Game Masters can further customize difficulty by adjusting hit points or enemy numbers to suit their campaigns.
This flexibility makes the Ironmoor Troll encounter easy to drop into an ongoing game, whether your players are exploring a haunted swamp, tracking raiders through marshlands, or simply looking for trouble in the wilderness.
Terrain Spotlight
The video also showcases a custom-built swamp UDT (Ultimate Dungeon Terrain), bringing the Blackroot Mire to life with immersive terrain and miniature placement. Seeing the encounter physically represented on the tabletop helps demonstrate how environmental features can influence both strategy and storytelling.
