Random Encounter: The Enchanted Pool of the Emerald Grove

09/09/2024

Welcome back for another random encounter. This series is about working with ChatGPT to create a random encounter and then seeing if I can make that encounter at the table using my miniatures and terrain.

I asked ChatGPT to create a random fantasy TTRPG encounter that includes the stat blocks for any creatures in both D&D 5E and Shadowdark. I request ChatGPT to include a roleplaying and a combat element as part of the encounter. I also ask it to include treasure if it would be applicable. This is what I got this week:

Location: Deep within an ancient forest, a secluded clearing surrounds a mystical pool of shimmering water. The trees here are thick with moss, and the air is heavy with the scent of damp earth. However, the once-peaceful grove is now tainted by a dark corruption.

Background:

The enchanted pool has long been a source of powerful natural magic, revered for its healing properties. However, the pool’s magic has been corrupted, and a once-peaceful Shambling Mound has been twisted into a creature of destruction. Serving the Shambling Mound are several Needle Blights—small, twisted plant creatures that have been tainted by the same dark force.

Roleplaying Element:

As the adventurers approach the grove, they encounter Liora, an elven druid who has long protected the grove. She explains that the corruption has spread through the forest, and the Shambling Mound, which once guarded the pool, has turned hostile. She pleads for the adventurers’ help purging the corruption and restoring balance to the grove.

Liora offers the party her assistance and knowledge, and if they agree to help, she grants them a small blessing (such as temporary hit points or advantage on saving throws against poison).

Liora’s future involvement in the campaign may depend on how the players interact with her and the choices they make during this encounter.

Combat Element:

The corrupted guardian of the grove is a Shambling Mound accompanied by several Needle Blights. The Shambling Mound draws power from the enchanted pool, making it more formidable, while the Needle Blights harass and weaken the party from a distance with their deadly projectiles.

The target can try to escape with a DC 14 Strength check.

Shambling Mound – Shadowdark RPG

Wooden Blight – Shadowdark RPG

Armor Class: 13
Hit Points: 5 (1d6+2)

Combat Challenge:

The battle takes place around the enchanted pool, with dense undergrowth and trees providing cover for the Blights. The Shambling Mound will try to draw the party toward the pool, where its regeneration can keep it in the fight longer. The Needle Blights will attempt to pepper the party with ranged attacks, using their needles to inflict damage from a distance.

Liora can assist the party with healing or support spells, but she is not a combatant and may require protection from the Blights.

Treasure:

Once the Shambling Mound and its Needle Blight minions are defeated, the corruption begins to recede, and the enchanted pool returns to its former purity. As a reward for their bravery, Liora offers the adventurers magical items hidden within the grove:

  1. Cloak of the Verdant Grove: Grants advantage on Stealth checks in natural environments and resistance to poison damage.
  2. Staff of Nature’s Wrath: Allows the wielder to cast Entangle and Cure Wounds once per day.
  3. Amulet of Nature’s Shield: Grants resistance to bludgeoning damage and the ability to cast Barkskin once per day.

The purified pool offers a blessing of nature, granting each party member a temporary boon (such as enhanced abilities, a vision of the future, or temporary immunity to a specific type of damage).

Conclusion:

With the Shambling Mound and its Needle Blight minions defeated the grove begins to heal. Liora thanks the adventurers for their aid and offers her assistance in the future. The party leaves the enchanted grove, knowing they have preserved a place of great power and gained a valuable ally in Liora. The encounter may have lasting consequences, influencing the balance of nature in the region and their relationship with the druidic order.

Ok, now for the table. I look through the terrain I have as well as the miniatures that I collected. Here is what I came up with:

I start with my grassland UDT and place the pool model in the center of the UDT. I added a few trees to the perimeter as well as some small forest scatter terrain pieces that have some colors I would picture in an enchanted fey location. There are locations for players to hide but the trees also block the line of sight to the monsters.

I place a miniature on the table for Liora, the elven druid that guards the enchanted pool.

I add a shambling mound and four other wooden constructs to the encounter. I would place them around the scene depending on the actions of the players (do they sneak into the area, do they try to draw out the blights, etc).
