Here is the first part of the Cragmaw Hideout. This section starts with the encounter with the goblins outside of the cave.

As the party approaches the cave entrance, the goblins will attack from the cover of the bushes next to the cave. (I really need to make some river terrain instead of the blue construction paper).

Before putting the goblins on the board, I would ask the players to put themselves in the marching order as they approach the cave entrance.

I would place the goblins in the clearing after and have the players roll perception to see if they can see/hear the goblins. Otherwise, the player will be surprised during the first round of combat.

The first encounter with the cave’s inhabitants is the kennel. There are three wolves here chained to the wall. In each round the PCs are visible to the wolves, the wolves pull on the chains. (See the adventure).

The next part is the steep slope and the overpass. I used a rough scatter terrain piece to show the slope, and some dungeon stackers with a bridge to make the overpass. If the goblin spots the characters, it will signal the other goblins to release the flood.
Keep on gaming!
Wonderful how little terrain can be carefully used to set up such enticing vignettes.
Cheers,
Pete.

and it doesn’t take a long time to setup. Players get bored really quick when placing terrain out. If you put it all out then they see everything before they get there.
