My UDT Collection

04/06/2022

Since I started that new piece of UDT (ultimate dungeon terrain), I thought it would be nice to pull them out of the closet and see what I have already made in the past. I must admit, I had forgotten about some of these pieces.

1st up is the Origial UDT. It has a simple grid pattern and gray brink texture. It is the biggest of all of my UDT pieces being about 20″ in diameter. All of the other UDTs are about 16″ which is a little better since it doesn’t take up as much room on the table. This UDT is double-sided with…

… an open grassland UDT on the other side. This would be good for outside encounters. I have a lot of trees and bushes that I made that would work well here.

The next UDT in the collection is the open lava UDT. It has a simple red, orange, and yellow paint scheme. I did make some rocks and platforms to place on it for a volcano encounter. This UDT is also double-sided with …

… a crusted-over lava UDT on the back. I used a lot of hex-shaped pieces that I have been saving from old HeroClix games. They had a rocky texture on them so I just painted them black, glued them to the UDT, then dry brushed them gray. The same rock terrain can be used for this side too.

Up next is the sewer UDT. The water didn’t turn out as deep as I thought it would be but it is still usable. The stonework is gray and tan blocks with the sewage and wet bricks having a green tint to them. This UDT is also double-sided with …

… a swamp UDT on the backside. I couldn’t add a lot of height to the UDT since it is double-sided so the fallen logs had to be placed into the water pools which were a little sunken into the terrain. I did add green tea flocking to the terrain and sealed everything with a gloss ModPodge so it looks wet. I have some dead-looking trees that can be placed on here if needed.

This is my sci-fi UDT. I placed a layer of “granny grating” over the entire surface to give the terrain a starship steel plating feel. I made some sci-fi walls and scatter terrain to place on the tile for a space encounter. This UDT is also double-sided with…

… a red alien planet UDT on the back. I put fine sand flocking on the UDT before painting to give it a desert feel. I made some red rocks and strange plant life scatter terrain to go with this side of the UDT. I don’t play a lot of sci-fi games but I should since I have the miniatures for it.

This is my Underdark UDT and it is single-sided. Instead of the usual grey color scheme, I went with purples and blues for the colors. I also used the fine sand flocking on this to give it a carved cavern look. I made special UDT walls and arches with a matching color scheme and fine sand flocking to use with this UDT. This UDT was a single-side so there is room on the other side for a new terrain type if I need it.

My first attempt at UDT 2.0. I don’t like the way the wash seemed to pool to one side of the UDT. I don’t think the table I had it on while it was drying was completely level. I didn’t want to waste it so I completed it, but it is not my favorite. I also made 2 rings of blocks on the outside of the UDT. It would have been better with a single row. Luckily it is single-sided so I do have room on the other side to put something better. Live and learn…

Finally, my ice UDT and it too is single-sided. It turned out alright. I did a few scatter pieces for it. I did buy some icicles this past Christmas that I am thinking of making in ice crystals that are jutting out of the icy lake. Plus, it will give me a chance to experiment with the glue/baking soda snow mixtures that I have seen on YouTube crafting channels.

Well, that is the whole collection so far. It was nice to pull them out and see them again. I really should find the scatter terrain pieces in the closet and set up some small encounters on each one to show off the brilliance of the UDT system as well as some of the miniatures that I have (since I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000 miniatures in the closet in various containers and boxes).

Maybe do some shots like a Dungeoncraft video where I show off an encounter idea using my models and terrain pieces. Just an idea.

If you would like to see some encounter scenes on the blog, leave a comment!

Thank you Professor Dungeon Master for the great idea!

Keep on gaming!

  1. Looks like the lava one or the red planet UDT would work well for Dark Sun. Yeah, I’d love to see a video of some UDT with terrain and minis!
