World-building Wednesday: new NPC and the Districts of Golden Fields in my Shadowdark Campaign

10/16/2024

I spent some time adding to my Shadows of the Sundered Throne Shadowdark campaign recently. I took the Shadowdark rulebook and rolled up the different districts of Golden Fields. This divided the village into three districts.

The village’s portion on the north side of the Dawnveil River is the low district. Here is where most of the poorer villagers live. Most of these villagers are farmhands, dock workers, and the like.

The south side of the Dawnveil River is the market district. I place the Bramblefoot Inn and Golden Fields Supplies in this area. We have already generated the NPCs and those locations.

The southernmost portion of the village is the artisan district with a modest temple. This area is where the blacksmith, apothecary, etc would be located. I need to create the temple and NPC now.

Using the Shadowdark rules, I roll up Lem, a Lawful middle-aged human who runs the temple. He is wealthy (temple funds are available for him to use) and likes to pray aloud. We name the temple the Shrine of the Just Shield and add it to the map. He will be available to give rumors, quests, history of the Gods, etc. I might make him a low-level Cleric and give him access to minor healing if the party doesn’t have a healer among them.

I am going to start building up my Schrodinger’s Scenarios for this campaign. I have started to record my creation of these scenarios and will post them when complete. I also want to flush out a few starting adventure locations for the initial rumors. The players should have a few leads to pursue from the beginning and build out from there. Some of the leads may be static locations (old ruins not disturbed in centuries) and some will be fluid that will be recorded on the calendar with goals and timelines (see my post on Friday where I go into details about this subject including an example).

Keep on gaming!
