The Lazy DM One-Page Campaign Guide – Shadows of the Sundered Throne (Shadowdark)

07/17/2024

A few months ago I started to create a campaign for a Shadowdark game run in the campaign setting that I was generating with the help of ChatGPT. As part of the Lazy DM method, I created a one-page campaign guide that would be handed out to the potential players. This allows them to see the theme of the campaign to make sure it is something they would want to play in. It also gives them some basic guidance for their character ideas.

Shadows of the Sundered Throne Campaign Sheet

Shadows of the Sundered Throne. As the once-mighty kingdom of Thessaria teeters on the edge of collapse, our heroes find themselves in the forgotten borderlands, where the flames of war have scorched the very foundations of stability. The true heroes are not the legends of old but the overlooked denizens striving to rebuild amidst the ruins. As the kingdom’s forgotten, they will rediscover their strength, unite the fractured communities, and, against all odds, stand as the unsung champions who might yet mend the wounds of the Sundered Kingdom.

TRUTHS OF THE SHADOWDARK

The following knowledge is common among those finding themselves in the forgotten borderlands of Thessaria.

  • Thessaria is governed by Emperor Augustus, a clever and shrewd leader who appreciates intellect and knowledge.
  • Athendria, the Capital of Thessaria, is a center of learning and scholarship, with great libraries and universities.
  • The kingdom is known for its skilled artisans and master craftsmen, as well as its military might and strategic prowess.
  • The Emperor’s brother, Prince Ariston, now known as Lord Phobos, has allied with goblinoids and demons. He has initiated a war to take over the Kingdom.
  • Since the war began, support from Athendria has been scarce. This has caused the citizens to worry about their future.
  • Traveling between the remote towns in the borderlands has become more dangerous as evil begins to move through the shadows.
  • People have been vanishing and rumors are spreading rapidly.

EMBRACING THE SHADOWDARK

Shadowdark RPG is a fantasy adventure game where you and your companions delve into buried ruins, lost cities, spider-infested forests, and even fearsome dragon lairs in search of gold and glory. Shadowdark RPG is rules-light and intuitive. It encourages quick decisions rather than hunting through the rulebook for answers.

Shadowdark is not a high fantasy game. It is a grim fantasy game. Characters can die – often. The world challenges your wits, not your natural abilities. Character empowerment comes from how you face the challenges in the world – not your character’s special abilities.

YOUR CHARACTER IN THE SHADOWS

While others in the Shadows of the Sundered Throne have most succumbed to their grim existence, you seek something else. Maybe it’s a way out. Maybe it’s to channel your anger towards the shapeless horror in the borderlands. Maybe it’s the reward of a shining gold coin.

Above all, alongside your companions, you seek to end the evils of this accursed evil.

CHARACTER CREATION GUIDELINES

This campaign uses characters built with the Shadowdark RPG core book or Shadowdark RPG free QuickStart set. You can also choose the campaign classes of the Witch and the Warlock. These classes and their additional information will be provided.

Characters begin at 1st level. We’ll generate characters and roll for abilities during our session zero. Do not roll your character up ahead of time and do not fall in love with your character idea.

“PAUSE FOR A MINUTE”

During the campaign, at any time, a player or GM can say “pause for a minute” to stop the current conversation, break character, and address the situation. This can be used for anything from “I really don’t like this thing in the game” to “I don’t understand why we’re in this dungeon”. Use it freely to clarify the direction of the game and address any concerns.

CONSENT, LINES, AND VEILS

This campaign contains the following matters: psychological horror, grim lives, hopeless existence, death – lots of death.

This campaign contains the following material veiled offscreen and only conducted by villains: torture and slavery.

This campaign will not have any of the following: non-consensual sexual contact or harassment, player-initiated torture, violence towards animals, and violence towards children.

Characters in this campaign work together to defeat the shadows of the darkness. Characters will not steal or fight with one another. You seek the fellowship of your companions to face the shadows in the darkness together.

Keep on gaming!
