“Illusionists, fey pranksters, and magical con artists.”
Tricksters get a small selection of weapons: Club, crossbow, dagger, short bow, shortsword, and the staff. Tricksters can wear leather armor but cannot use a shield.
All Tricksters know the Sylvan language. It must be from the fey magic they are using.
Tricksters have 4 features: Flabbergast, Prestige, Repertoire, and Spellcasting.
Flabbergast allows the Trickster to cast a spell when they roll initiative before combat starts as long as they are not surprised.
Prestige gives the Trickster Advantage on checks related to deception, impersonation, sleight of hand, and misdirection.
Repertoire is a fun mechanic. After the Trickster completes a rest, they roll on a table to see what spells they can use until the next rest.
Spellcasting allows the Trickster to cast spells using Charisma. The Trickster also has a special critical failure mechanic. Every time they cast a spell, their critical failure limit increases; by 1 on a success and by 3 on a failure. If the Trickster fails a spell (but not critically) the effect doesn’t happen but they don’t lose the spell. On a critical failure, the Trickster’s spell doesn’t take effect, they lose the spell, and they roll on a Fey Mishap table. The Critical Failure limit resets to 1 after a rest or a critical failure.
Overall Take: The Trickster is a fun character to play if you like randomness. The spells will change after each rest and the critical failure mechanic makes the character balance out using spells against the risk of failure.
