Who’s that?

This is going to be a new series where I will pick a Game System and build a new character for it, similar to what I used to do with Superhero Saturdays but with a different system every week.

I believe that we will start off the series with a new system I have: EZD6 from Scotty “DM SCOTTY” McFarland. Looking at pg 20, the book has a handy sheet that walks you through character creation.

1st up: choosing a hero path. We will go with a Warrior path and mark that on the character sheet. We fill in the Armor Save and Miraculous Save along with the health, boons, and path features. We also get 3 Karma and one Hero Die.

2nd: Choose a race. I go with Human for the extra inclination.

3rd: Choose inclinations. Here is where the characters start to become more specialized and distinct. I look over the list a few times while thinking about the type of character that I want to create. I finally decide on:

  1. Hatred of the Unholy
  2. Devout
  3. Faithful

I see the character has a holy warrior that searches the land for demons and undead to destroy. He is devoted to his gods and may ask for assistance.

4th: Choosing aspects. Since this is just for me (treating it like a one-shot), I can just add whatever I like without too much worry since I have no RR to say no. I think for a minute or two then add Paladin of the Light and Unrelenting in the face of Evil. He will get to roll a boon die whenever these aspects would be a benefit to the roll. (Like dealing with a church to the gods of Light or when trying to continue on a task when most people would have given up)

5th: Choose Circle of Sorcery if Conjurer. Since I am not a Conjurer, I can skip this step.

6th: Choose equipment. You get to pick your weapons since all weapons do 1 strike on a hit. I select the long sword and add that to the character sheet. I also add his plate armor and shield. You then get to roll some dice to determine the rest of your starting equipment. We roll a D6 for each of the 8 groups (4 common and 4 specialty). I get:

  1. Backpack
  2. Metal Tongs
  3. Small Hammer
  4. Chalk Sticks
  5. Holy Water (fitting)
  6. Small Bell
  7. Bone Dice
  8. Exotic Spices

While random, these items can be used to work on the concept of the character. At this point, we have completed the character. He just needs a name and some background. I also set him as Cash Poor for wealth since he isn’t rich by any means.

For the name, I go with Brandis Slywood. It is a name that I have used for various D&D characters over the years.

As for the random items and the character concept, maybe Brandis uses the spices plus the special hammer and bell as part of his daily ritual (offering to the gods of Light to allow a re-roll of dice for a failed miracle). He might use the tongs to sift the remains of demons and other creatures so he is not physically touching them. Holy water is always good against an unholy creature.

The bone dice and chalk stick belonged to his daughter that was killed when a demon attacked his village. Brandis was the lone survivor. He pledged his life to the gods of Light afterward. He carries those items with him as a reminder of what happens when evil is allowed to live.

A quick Google search comes up with a suitable image and this character would be ready to go.

It is that easy to make a character for EZD6. The system looks very rules-light and streamlined. It would be great for a pickup one-shot or a convention-style game. You could have everyone make up characters in 10-15 minutes then run directly into the game. Nobody has to bring a character sheet with them or use a pre-generated character.

I am not sure how well it would work for a long-run campaign since there is no progression along a path like 5E. The book does give you an idea of how to run a campaign but most players look to level up or get better at skills. None of that is available in EZD6.

Keep on gaming!
