Marvel Multiverse Roleplaying Game?

11/04/2021

Today while looking to buy more filament for my Ender 3 Pro on Amazon I saw a recommendation from Amazon for the Marvel Multiverse Roleplaying Game. It is pre-release (March 29, 2022) for the Playtest rules for $9.99.

I must admit that I am a little curious about the game. Marvel has been on a roll in the movies so the license is hot right now. I have purchased most of the older Marvel superhero games in the past and found some of them to be slightly disappointing (I’m looking at you Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game). Even the Margeret Weis Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Game wasn’t the best with the limited Events that you felt you had to run (and I did buy all of the available books and ran the Civil War event for my brothers). The only edition of the game that felt like the Marvel universe was the old TRS Marvel Roleplaying Game (FASERIP).

I have to confess that while I have played many different games over the years (Dungeons and Dragons 1E through 5E, Star Wars – all editions, Shadowrun, Vampire, Werewolf, Top Secret, Fate, BESM, etc), superhero games were always my favorite. I have tried many different game systems for running supers games, my favorite has to be the Mutants and Masterminds 3E. While I have all of the editions, the 3E edition seems to be the best fit for me. 2E was great but there were some things that needed to be changed (like the stun death spiral).

I like the point-buy system for generating heroes. I love the random character generator that creates a useable PC that is 150pts and a COMPLETE concept. ICONS has a random generator for creating characters and it is very amusing if using the characters for a one-shot, but they felt thrown together like hitting random on an online character designer (nothing seems to match).

The Marvel FASERIP system also had a random character creation system but you could end up with PCs that were not on the same power level as each other. Again, fun for a one-shot, but it leaves players feeling pushed to the side if used for a campaign.

If anyone knows anything about the Marvel Multiverse game system, like if it is using a known rules system or if it is a new system, please let me know. I am curious if this is something I should be looking at… plus I really HATE buying PLAYTEST material then having to buy the final rules when they are released.

Keep on gaming!
