Creating a Fantasy Calendar

10/11/2021

When running certain adventures (like Out of the Abyss), it is important to track days and travel times, especially when you have a deadline.

I created a calendar for my D&D 5E group using the zodiac signs (something that most people are vaguely familiar with). I made it 6 weeks a month and 5 days a week with 4 special weeks a year named after the changing of the seasons. I included the phases of the moon as well.

You can hand this out to the players at the 1st session (or session 0 if you can). This lets the players feel like they now more about the world. Plus, you can make them track the passage of time by referencing it or calling on a player (examples: What is it today? When did you last rest in a village?, How long before the blacksmith finishes your custom weapon? )

If you are running a fantasy game, feel free to use my calendar or make your own. Use something as a basis and run with it (Colors of the rainbow but in a foreign language, City names from a foreign country, etc.)

As always, have fun and keep on gaming!
