Another (Zombie) Blast From the Past

09/28/2021

Here is another older solo game that I did using Mythic as a story aid. The main mechanics for the game are Mutants and Masterminds by Green Ronin (https://greenronin.com/). This story was based on the Supernatural series. I created a “hunter” names Jake Monroe who travels around the country looking for supernatural troubles.

This game made it 6 scenes before being abandoned. 😦

Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition

Scene 1

Jake is going to a local shady bar, looking for leads to any unnatural activity.
Chaos Factor: 5
Roll: 3 Altered Scene
The bar that Jake goes to will be closed.

As Jake makes his way through the dark back streets of Grandville, he comes upon the bar. The lights are all out and there is a sign on the door stating that the bar has been closed due to health code violations. “Great! I walked all the way down here and the place is closed.” He looks up and down the street, and then walks around back of the bar.

Is there anyone behind the bar? Unlikely, [42] No.
Are there any clues back here? Unlikely, [63] No.

Jake makes his way to the back of the bar. The alley holds nothing but a few bags of empty beer bottles and a few rats. Jake turns and leaves the alley, reemerging on the street in front of the bar.

Does Jake see anyone on the street? Unlikely, [30] Yes
Is there more than one? Very Unlikely, [89] Critical No.
Do they spot Jake? 50/50, [11] Yes, plus random event.
NPC Action, Dominate Peace.

As Jake return to the front of the bar, an old man in a ragged coat is standing at the bar door. The man bangs on the door a few times, yelling “JERRY! JERRY! OPEN UP! JERRY!” By the sound of the slurred speech, the man is obviously a hobo. When the man notices Jake standing there, he turns and staggered towards Jake. “Do you know where Jerry is?

“Sorry, I just got here. Did you come here a lot?”

“Every day for as long as I can remember. Why?” The hobo seemed a little defensive at the question. “What’s it to ya?”

Jake took a step back from the man. ” I just want to see if you knew if anything strange was happening around here, that’s all”

Does the hobo know anything? Likely, [10] Critical Yes
Does it involve vampires? 50/50, [82] No
Is it werewolves? 50/50, [53] No
I will go with zombies…

The old man looks at Jake for a second or two. “Do you work for the government?”

“No. Why do you ask?” Jake was a little puzzled by the question.

“I have seen these trucks picking up homeless people over on the next street. They say they are here to take them to a shelter on the other side of town. They took my friend Bobby a few weeks ago. Then a couple of days later, I saw Bobby walking down the street, but there was something wrong with him. He was changed!” The hobo looks around before continuing. “It was like he was dead but he was still walking around!” The hobo then pulls his coat up around him and starts mumbling to himself. He staggers off down the street.

End Scene 1

Jake waits until the next night before beginning is search for the mystery vans. He walks down the street with a duffle bag in his left hand. Inside the bag are his shotgun and crossbow. He has his knife on his belt and the heavy pistol is tucked into the back of his pants. He moves slowly down the poorly lit street, looking for groups of homeless to watch.

Jake is unsettled by the total absence of any homeless on the street. “Do they know something that I don’t” Jake stops and backs into a doorway and out of the light.

Is the Notice Dc more than 10? 50/50, [30] Yes
More than 15? Unlikely, [82] No
Jake’s Notice check = 18+11=29.

As Jake backs out of the light, he spots a group of strange men step out of an alley into the street. In the light, Jake can see that there is blood all over their clothes, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting them. The strange men stumble as they move down the street towards from Jake. “I think I found Bobby.” Jake whispers to himself as he pulls the crossbow from his duffle bag.

End Scene 2

I am going to stop there and run the fight as a separate scene. I think that Jake can handle 5 zombie, but a couple of bad rolls might end this story quickly.

Chaos Factor: +1 [5]
NPCs: The Hobo, Bobby the Zombie, Homeless, Zombie Horde
Threads: Find out what happened to Bobby; Find the trucks to the shelter; Defeat the Zombie Horde

Scene 3

Chaos Factor: 5

Thread: Jake takes on the zombie horde

Roll: 9, no modifications

Ok, it is Jake vs 5 zombies. I will give Jake an extra HP to use since he is badly outnumbered [Giving him 2HP total].

INIT: Jake 7, Zombies 16….not good for Jake. Since he is in a doorway, only 3 zombies can attack at one time.

Round 1

Zombies: The zombies move towards Jake. Three get attacks, 2 with a -4 for partial cover. The first zombie attacks. Attack= 16, Defense=10. A hit. Save DC=16, Toughness= 8, Bruised, Injured, and stunned! Second zombie attack=10, Defense=14 [miss]. The third zombie attacks=15, defense=14. A hit! Save DC=16, Toughness=14. Bruised and Injured. Jake will use a HP [1HP left] to go this round. He will drop the crossbow, quick-draw his knife, and attack the first zombie. Attack=23, Defense=11. A hit. Save DC=19, Toughness=17. The zombie is Bruised and Injured! [Since it is a minion class character, it is out of the fight!] He then uses his Takedown feat to attack the third zombie. Attack=14, Defense=8. A hit! Save DC=19, Toughness=15. Bruised and Injured! [and out!]. Takedown against the second zombie. Attack=24, Defense=17. Save DC=19, Toughness=21. No effect! [/quote]

As Jake retrieves his crossbow from the duffle bag, the zombies close in on him and attacks before he is ready. The first zombie leans in and bites Jake on the left arm, drawing blood. Jake lets out a scream as the second zombie attacks. Its dirty claws miss Jake as the third zombie rakes his right cheek. Jake pushes the zombie back with the crossbow, dropping it to the ground as he pulls his trusty knife from its sheath. Jake slashes the first zombie across the throat and it collapses to the ground. He then spins and drives the blade into the skull of the third zombie, sending it to the ground next to the first. Then he drives the blade into the chest of the second zombie, but it appears not to harm it.

Round 2
Zombies: The second zombie moves into a better position and attacks Jake. Attack=7, Defense=12. A miss! The fourth zombie and fifth zombie move into position to attack. Fourth’s attack=15, Defense=11. A hit. Save DC=16, Toughness=22. No damage! Fifth attack=10, Defense=11. A miss! Jake slashes the second with his knife. Attack=15, Defense=7. A hit. Save DC =19, Toughness=4. Fails by 15! Dying and out! Takedown on the fourth. Attack=16, Defense=17. A miss!

The second zombie pushes forward, claws reaching for Jake’s flesh, but Jake is too fast for him. The fourth zombie bites down on Jake’s right shoulder, but his leather jacket provides enough protection. The fifth zombie’s wild swings don’t connect with the nimble night hunter. Jake pulls his knife from the second zombie’s chest and drives it into its neck. The creature’s head nearly comes off as it falls to the ground. Jake swings at the fourth zombie, cutting into its arm but no really doing any damage.

[Round 3
Zombies: The fourth zombie gets in its attacks. Attack=10, Defense=29! MISS! The fifth zombie attacks! Attack=12, Defense=23. A miss! Jake attacks the fourth zombie again. Attack=25, Defense=18. Save DC=19, Toughness=9. Fails by 10! Staggered, Disabled, Stunned and out! Takedown on fifth, Attack=16, Defense=4. A hit. Save Dc=19, Toughness=4. Fails by 15. Dying and out!

The slow zombies swing at Jake but fail to connect again. He slashes the fourth zombie across the throat, and it collapses. He kicks the last zombie back then jumps onto it, driving the knife deep into the undead skull. The creature goes limp as they hit the ground. Jake quickly climbs to his feet, retrieves his crossbow from the ground, grabs the duffle bag, then bolts away from the scene as quickly as he can. That’s all I need, people thinking that I killed those people. That was stupid Jake! Grandpa taught me better than that!

End Scene 3

——————————————————

Well, Jake didn’t do too bad against the zombies but he almost died if I hadn’t used the HP.

Chaos Factor: +1[6]

NPCs: The Hobo, Bobby the Zombie, Homeless
Threads: Find out what happened to Bobby; Find the trucks to the shelter

Damage:
Jake Monroe: Bruised[x2], Injured[x2]
Zombies: All out!

Scene 4

Thread: Jake returns home to heal and come up with better plan.
Chaos Factor: 6
Roll: 4, Interrupt Scene
Event: NPC Action, Passion Good. [Love interest?]

As Jake rounds the corner, a young lady steps out of her doorway and calls out “Quickly! Over here!” Jake hesitates only a second before following the lady into the building. She slams the door shut and bolts it with several locks. She then leads Jake up a few flights of stairs and into a small apartment. She bolts that door behind them. “I am glad that you are safe. Those things seemed quite vicious.”

“Not to seem rude but who are you?” Jake sat down on a hard chair near the small table in the kitchen. He examined the wound to his left arm where the zombie had bitten him.

“My name is Gina Rodgers.” She walks into the bathroom and retrieves a first aid kit. “I am guessing that you’re a hunter, aren’t you? My father was a hunter.”

Gina sits down next to Jake at the table and begins to clean his wound.

“Do you know anything about those things?” Jake winces as the iodine burns his hurt arm.

Does Gina know anything about the zombies? Somewhat Likely, [53] Yes
Does she know where they are coming from? Unlikely, [42] No
Does she know who is responsible for the zombies? Unlikely, [29] Yes

“I know that the creatures didn’t start until those white vans started coming around. The gather up the homeless and take them somewhere, but I don’t know where they go. I believe that the side of the vans says something about ‘The Giving Hope Foundation’. It might be a start.” Gina wraps his arm in a bandage. “You better get going if you want to catch them before they move.”

“Thank you Gina.” Jake gets up from the table, unbolts the door, and heads out of the apartment.

Scene 5:

Going to Giving Hope Foundation Building
Chaos Factor: 5
Roll: 2, Interrupt Scene [Again!]
Event: NPC Positive, Carelessness a Path
Which NPC: Is it Gina? 50/50, [29] Yes

As Jake left the building, Gina pokes her head out of the window. “Hey Jake, look!” She points down the street to one of the white van that is parked at a gas station.

“Thanks Gina!” Jake bolts down the street towards the van. As he closes on the van, Jake can see a man standing at the pump, filling the tank.

Does the man spot Jake? Very Unlikely, [14] Yes
Does the man know who Jake is? Very Unlikely, [86] No

As Jake gets to the van, the man turns to face him. He looks Jake over quickly then says “Can I help you?”

“Sorry, I thought you were someone else.” Jake backs away from the van, trying to look inside.

Does Jake spot anything inside? Very Unlikely, [10] Yes
Is it a person? 50/50, [89] No
Is it a dead zombie? Unlikely,[98] Critical No
We will go with guns…

Jake spots a couple of shotguns lying in the back of the van. Why would a charity that helps homeless people need to carry those? Jake moves across the street and watches as the man goes inside to pay for the gas. Jake then goes back to the van and tries the back door.

Are the back doors locked? Likely, [52] Yes
Does the man spot Jake at the van? Unlikely, [69] No

Is the passenger door locked? 50/50, [91] No

Is there somewhere to hide in the van? Very Unlikely, [33] Yes, plus a random Event
Event: Close a Thread, Kill Trials
We will close the find the trucks to the shelter thread…

Jake tries the back door of the van but it is locked. He moves to the passenger side and opens the door. He quickly moves to the back of the van. He finds a pile of tarps lying in the back with the shotguns. He covers himself up in the tarps. As the man enters the van, his cellphone rings. “Yeah, what?” The voice on the other side is muffled but Jake can make out something about the driver having to return to the building to help clean out the evidence of the experiments. Apparently, the experiment was a failure and they are moving it to a new location. The man hangs up and starts the van, driving off towards the base with Jake in the back.

End of Scene 5

Chaos Factor: +1[6]
NPCs: The Hobo, Bobby the Zombie, Homeless, Gina Rodgers, Zombie Horde, Van Driver
Threads: Find the Giving Hope Foundation, Find out about experiments

Well, it looks like Jake found the Foundation. I hope that he can handle whatever he finds when he gets out of the van.

Scene 6

Thread: Find out what is happening at the Foundation
Chaos Factor: 6
Roll: 7, No changes

Jake stays hiding until he feels the van come to a stop and hears the driver get out of the van. He pauses for another minute than climbs out from under the tarp and looks out the back windows.

Are they people outside the van? 50/50, [44] Yes, plus a Remote Event

More than 3? Unlikely, [26] Yes
More than 5? Very Unlikely, [100] Critical No. So there are 4 people outside the van.
Let’s see what the random event is…Move towards a thread, Carelessness Death.
We will go with 3 zombies outside the van plus the driver.

Does the driver see the zombies coming? Somewhat Likely, [89] No

As Jake moves up to the back window, he can see the van is parked in an underground garage. The driver is leaning against a concrete support, smoking a cigarette. Behind the man in the shadows, Jake spots 3 zombies moving towards the driver. Before the driver can notice them, the zombies rush the man. Their claws tear into his flash as the man screams. “Let’s do this!” Jake kicks open the back door and leaps onto the concrete floor with his shotgun in hand.

Jake is about 10 ft. from the zombies and the remains on the driver. INIT: Jake: 15, Zombies: 12. Round 1 – Jake will unload the shotgun into the first zombie as his standard action. Att=25, Def=5, a hit. Save DC =20, Toughness=13, fails by 7. Zombie 1 goes down. He will use his move action to reload the shotgun. Zombie 2 will move to Jake and attack. Att=9, Def=20, a miss. Zombie 3 follows Zombie 2’s actions and attacks Jake. Att=13, Def=26, a miss.

As Jake lands, he fires the shotgun into the first zombie. The blast knocks it backwards. It lands with a THUD and doesn’t move. Jake ejects the shells from his gun and reloads. The second zombie moves towards Jake and swings at his head with its filthy claws. Jake ducks the swing, pushing the zombie back with the shotgun. The third zombie also reaches for Jake, but he is too quick.

Round 2 – Jake will attack the second zombie with the shotgun. Att=23, Def=7, a hit. Save Dc=20, Toughness=16. Zombie 2 is out. Jake’s move action is to reload the gun. Jake will use extra effort to go again. Att=18, Def=2[Natural 1], a hit! Save DC=20, Toughness= 15. Zombie 3 is out. Jake will be fatigued.

Jake points the shotgun at the second zombie and unloads it into the zombie’s chest. Blood sprays from the wound as the zombie collapses to the floor. Jake quickly ejects the shell, replacing it with a fresh one. He points the gun under the last zombie’s chin. “Stay dead this time.” He pulls the trigger, removing the zombie’s head. The body falls over motionless to the ground. Jake walks over to the remains of the driver and quickly starts searching the body.

Is there anything useful on the driver? 50/50, [99] Critical No, plus random event.
Event: Introduce a new NPC, Attract Emotion.

As Jake is searching the driver, he hears footsteps echoing in the garage. It sounds like someone running his direction. He backs up towards the van, reloading his shotgun. A shadow appears on the floor and Jake pecks out from behind the van. A young Asian lady dressed in a lab coat is running into the garage. “Is somebody there?” She calls out. “I heard gunshots.” She stops running and starts looking around quickly.

Jake steps out from behind the van, shotgun leaning on his shoulder. “That would have been me. Would you mind telling me who you are and what is going on here?”

She walks slowly towards Jake. It is oblivious by her red eyes and wet cheeks that she has been crying heavily. “My name is Dr. Chu, I am one of the scientist working here at the Foundation. We were working on a new viral weapon for the military. The virus, if injected into a corpse, reanimates the body. The problem is that the virus mutated into something else. It seems that certain people can catch the virus through skin contact. If a living person is affected, it warps their mind into one of those monsters.” She points to the remains of the zombies on the floor. “The operation has been shut down because of the mishap and all personnel and records are being moved. I was separated from the team escorting me out of the labs. Would you please help me?”

Since I just came up with the whole viral disease thing, I need to check Jake since he was bitten. I will make it a FORT check against the virus?
IS the Save DC greater than 10? Likely, [74]
12? Somewhat Likely, [91] No
Jake needs to make a Save Dc=12. Fort= 15. Jake is ok, for now.

“Sure. I was always a sucker for a damsel in distress.” Jake and Dr. Chu start walking through the underground garage, looking for an exit.

End of scene 6
